On May 26th, Uranus, the 7th planet of our Solar System moves to the sign of Aries, after 83 years. The incredible thing about this event is that Jupiter, in Pisces then, as it is now, accompanies such entry, and by June 8th, there will be a conjunction (0º) of these two planets in the 0º of Aries. At that time, 1927, the conjunction occurred at 3º of Aries.
Uranus, from the astrological point of view, is the planet which represents the archetypes of the rebel, the fight against the establishment, technology, electricity, genius, eccentricity, the different, anything out of the ordinary, non conventional, uranium, the discovery of the new and the different. It takes seven year to go through each sign, which means that we’ll now have a period of seven years of Uranus in Aries, starting now. Coincidentally, a period similar to a quarter of Saturn’s cycle. No wonder that every 6 to 7 years things get revised in our lives. Think of your life journey and see how many things lasted just about 6 to 7 years before undergoing a major crises or ending all together, or 14 or 21 or 28.
Aries, is the first sign of the zodiac and the first fire sign. As Martin Schulman said in his wonderful Allegory of the Creation of the world and the Zodiac: – God said to Aries: – ” To you Aries, I give my seed first, that you, might have the honor of planting it. That for every seed you plant, one million
more will multiply in your hand. You will not have time to see the seed grow, for everything you plant creates more, that must be planted. You will be the first to penetrate the soil of men’s minds with My idea. But it is not your job, to nourish the Idea nor to question it. Your life is action and the only action I ascribe to you is to begin making men, aware of My Creation. For your good work I give you the virtue of Self Esteem.” – How wonderful! I wonder which Aries will not relate to that Fate! There is no doubt that Aries is the impulse to be the first. Aries, risks, competes, acts before thinking, argues, fights and defends with passion, its land, its territory and his family. He or she, is the warrior, the soldier, the athlete, the first one.
Jupiter, is the 5th planet of our Solar System and the biggest, and Astrologically is connected with Nature, with our ideals, our beliefs, with long distance travel, especially those which involve some kind of risk and adventure. Other cultures, the foreigner, philosophy, religion, whatever takes our body and our minds to expand our horizons. It is through this planet that we dare to expand and look for what is on the other side of the river, or the Ocean, in the next town, beyond our borders. It is Aries and Mars which initiate the action, but is Jupiter that takes the action elsewhere, beyond the known horizon. It is through Jupiter that we may dare to live according to our highest ideals.
So taking all this into consideration, let’s go back to 1927, when this conjunction that it is about to happen, last happened. The 1st ( Aries) transatlantic (Jupiter) telephone (Uranus) call was made between New York and London. In the Bell’s Co. the first images where sent long distance, and so Television was born. Only 2 year later the first programed TV was on in New York. The first sports commentary in Radio took place, the first spoken film “The jazz singer” was shown in NYC. Amelia Earhart was the first woman pilot to travel solo, across the Atlantic. The fist police woman is incorporated in the Police Force in Dresden, Germany, Jose María Escriva founded Opus Dei, the Academy of Film and motion Pictures was founded and the first Oscar was given.
It is easy to assume now, that great advances in technology will take place, as it is no doubts, already happening, is even possible that the first trips around the Earth with passengers will take place. Richard Branson has been working at this, very quietly.
Unfortunately, many great natural disasters also happened in those years. The great China earthquake where 200.000 people died, in May 1927, Floods in the Mississippi area, the biggest to date killed over 700.000 americans. Japan suffered 3 major earthquakes in less than two months in the same year. IT was in 1930 when Uranus and Pluto where already involved in a square that Wall Street crashed sending the world and the States into the biggest Depression in History, and guess what, Pluto was discovered at the same time.
We all know what happened after that, the emergence of the right wind governments and Nazism, that took us to the Second World War.
The question is have we learned the lessons of the past.? do we need to go through the same experience?
The Conservative party in England has just won the elections. Just. After 13 years of Labour Party reign. Curiously, Jupiter and Uranus where also in a conjunction in Aquarius, when Tony Blair, defeated the Conservatives and Now with another Jupiter- Uranus conjunction in Pisces, the Conservatives win, but only having to merge with the Liberal Democrats. HA! I think we have learned some lessons, otherwise this could have never happened. Nor Obama. It kind of gives me some hope. May be our stupidity learns some of the lessons after all. Saturn was then in Aries, in direct opposition to today’s position in Libra.
Since Pluto came into Capricorn in January 2008, which marked the beginning of the financial crisis, many heads of state have died, unexpectedly forcing the CHANGE.
We are now heading to the closest degrees, this T- Square is ever going to be at the end of July, around the 0º of the cardinal signs. The Uranus-Pluto square will repeat 7 times and it will last till 2016. If we take into consideration the fact that these two planets, are collective forces and represent collective archetypes which we can all relate to, then is easy to assume, that whatever changes are taking place is what we all, as a unit, need. Us, the only human race on the planet.
We know that with Pluto in Capricorn many institutions will suffer major changes as it is already happening. One of the systems that seriously needs our attention is EDUCATION. We keep talking about it, but nothing really happens. Being the mother of a 16 years old, with artistic inclinations and talents, the options for college are still slim. It seems that the only professions people still value are: Medicine, Law, Architecture, Engineering and University professors. When are we going to teach for all children?. Instead of calling all creative children ADHD and medicate them, because we don’t understand their minds.
When are going to teach Astrology, Dance, Cooking, Music along side and with the same relevance as Maths, English, Science and Literature? When? Until when are we going to suppress Uranus in our charts so that it has to react violently to be heard? Would this square between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn, bring about this change in our educational system, or are we still too far away from that?
If you have in your chart any contact of Uranus to a personal planet (Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus or Mars) you will understand what I mean. Especially women with this position will, because most of us come from mothers that had to give up their freedom, their profession or even find out if they had the right to one, in order to keep the family going. Sounds familiar? Until when we are going to condemn our creative children to become lawyers, so that by the age of 40, they are so depressed and unhappy that Prosac seems to be the only allied.
Uranus is about the freedom to create, to express what James Hillman calls, our “calling”. Here in Spain where I live, the dream of being true to who are is simply that, a dream. Here most children are taught not to waste time in dancing, or painting or writing because “doing that you will never earn your living”, but the truth is that many people do earn their living doing that. The fear of the risk implied in trying to be oneself, is too much, for some of us, and we pass on that fear to our children, who sure enough, they’ll soon say: “I must go and study marketing or business, or i will never make a decent living out of what I like”. Truth is, there are many young people with a Marketing Diploma, and without a job. We have limit their options so much, that the amount of lawyers that finish each year, cannot get a job.
So we seriously have to review our approach to education, and the structure of our educational system and expand our horizons. Seriously.
Another institution that needs reviewing is Traditional Medicine. We are in serious need to go back to healing the patient rather than fixing a part. We have turn our hospitals in body-shops. If a part of your body aches, you go to see a doctor that sure enough will either replace the part or prescribe a legion of medicaments that will help you with the pain. But what about the origin of the illness? What about the soul? What about looking into the eyes of the patient and establish a conversation to find out what is the matter with his life? The last two doctors i went to, were so busy using the time allotted to me filling up a form in their computer that forgot to look at me. But I did go out with prescriptions and i hardly opened my mouth. If this sound like criticism, it is. Imagine if we Astrologers did that!
So Uranus in Aries, does not have to be a bad thing. There is a lot of interesting propositions for this transit and for those of us, with emphasis in Cardinal signs in our birth-charts, we already are seeing its effect and the changes are already taking place. Uranus, albeit un-predictive , is truly liberating, and at the end of the tunnel, there is light, there is the perspective of meeting our true self and the opportunity to do what we have been born to do.
